CASES of leptospirosis are on the rise in flooded areas of the province, according to records of the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) based in Dagupan City.

Dr. Michael Canto, R1MC spokesperson, said in August alone, 13 persons were already admitted, all suffering symptoms of leptospirosis.

He said only four cases of leptospirosis were registered in August last year.

Last month, five persons were admitted for leptospirosis, two of whom, from the towns of Sta. Barbara and Labrador died.

Of the 13 persons admitted at R1MC since August 1, two have died, one from Barangay Mayombo, Dagupan City and the other from Bani.

Of the 13, four were from Dagupan City, specifically from Mayombo, Arellano-Bani, Careenan and Bonuan Tondaligan.

For the whole year of 2011, R1MC registered 57 cases of leptospirosis.

Canto said R1MC continues to warn the public against wading in floodwaters that may be infected with the urine of rats, which is the source of the disease.

Bacteria leptospira usually enters the body of a person through an open wound.

Canto said the disease can be cured if the patient is brought to the hospital at an early stage of the disease.
