REP. GINA de Venecia has urged all local government units in her district to put up a mini-forest in support of global efforts against climate change.

De Venecia made the call when she led in the ceremonial planting of trees at the premises of the Dagupan Water District (DCWD), which celebrated its 25th anniversary last July 28.

It also marked the start of De Venecia’s district-wide greening program using the 120,000 tree seedlings she sourced from her Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF).

The planting was attended by Dagupan City Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez, DCWD Manager Ramon Reyna and representatives of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).

Bilang tagapangalaga ng kalikasan, obligasyon nating seguruhin na ang susunod na henerasyon ay makikinabang sa isang mayamang gubat ng mga puno,” said DeVenecia, recently chosen as one of the Ten Outstanding Congressmen of the Philippines by the Publishers Association of the Philippines, Inc.(PAPI).

She added that she would like to see mini-forests thriving in Dagupan, San Fabian, Mangaldan, San Jacinto and Manaoag in a few years.

Part of the 120,000 tree seedlings made available by De Venecia will go to public schools and to the barangays for planting in riverbanks to prevent soil erosion, and along roadsides as part of her program to beautify the newly widened highways.

The seedlings include 33, 965 flowering trees like Caballero, Fire Tree, Golden Shower and Tecoma. There were also 21,962 seedlings of narra, 20,083 mahogany, 5,000 Kamagong, and 26,049 bamboos of the kawayang bayog and kawayang tinik species, among others.

Provincial Environment and Natural Resources Officer Leduina Co noted that young trees have better water absorption capacities than matured trees, thus are more effective in preventing flood.—with report from Eva Visperas
