Pangasinan lines up Nutrition Month activities
MEMBERS of the Healthy Habit Club, a group of provincial government employees, will show their skills in preparing low-cost and healthy vegetable dishes in a cooking demo at the Pangasinan Training and Development Center on July 25 as part of Pangasinan’s observance of the 38th Nutrition Month
The provincial government will also distribute vegetable seedlings in support of the campaign to encourage backyard gardening in homes, schools, and communities.
This year’s Nutrition Month highlights the importance of vegetable with the theme “Pagkain ng gulay ugaliin, araw-araw itong ihain.”.
Milagros Gutierrez, dietician and nutritionist of the Provincial Health Office, speaking during the Pantongtongan Tayo radio program of the Philippine Information Agency last Tuesday said the celebration seeks to increase vegetable consumption as part of a healthy diet to address micronutrient deficiencies and non-communicable diseases; promote vegetable gardening as a source of additional food and income; and boost demand for vegetables to increase the income of local vegetable farms.
Other activities lined up are vegetable gardening on July 17 and 19 in selected schools of Aguilar and Lingayen, respectively by the Provincial Health Office in partnership with the towns’ Municipal Nutrition Councils.
For the culminating event, a poster and slogan-making contest will be conducted at the Capitol Resort Hotel on July 30. Pangasinan I and II divisions will send six contestants who will compete for the medals and cash prizes at stake.
The national government sets the annual celebration of Nutrition Month to create greater awareness among Filipinos on the importance of nutrition, focusing attention on making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits. (PIA-Pangasinan-AMM)
