LGUs join workshop on tsunami warning system
LINGAYEN—Municipal and barangay officials attended on July 26 and 27 a Capacity Building Workshop for a cost-effective local tsunami warning system for selected high-risk coastal communities in the country.
The workshop was organized by the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) in cooperation with the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC).
Angelito G. Lanuza, PHIVOLCS representative and workshop facilitator said the capability-building was aimed at further educating the grassroots communities, particularly those situated in coastal areas, on basic facts about various disasters like earthquakes and tsunamis.
Lanuza noted that at least 20 earthquakes occur in various parts of the country but these are not actually felt as they vary in strength.
He also stressed that the “Philippines is exposed to far-field and locally generated tsunamis” but people in the communities are unaware of it,
He cited Lingayen as one of the areas prone to tsunami considering its location.
“The establishment of a mass alerting system using tsunami warning siren, the first in the country, is a welcome development,” he said.
The participants of the two-day workshop were briefed on the following: Earthquake and Its Hazards, Overview of Tsunami (Generation, Hazards and Mitigation), PHIVOLCS Earthquake Intensity Scale, Tsunami Alert Levels, Community-Based Early Warning System for Tsunami, and Basic Map Reading.
Film and video-showing involving experiences from historical earthquakes and tsunamis also highlighted the lecture proper.
“The very basic thing that communities must develop is the sense of awareness and involvement,” the PHIVOLCS representative said. (PIO)
