HEART ATTACK SPAM TEXT

LINGAYEN—Another malicious spam text message circulated last week.

This time, the source of which remains unknown, called for prayers for Governor Amado Espino Jr. who was supposedly hospitalized in the United States after suffering from a heart attack.

The message, originating from mobile phone number 09198236252, reads: “Please offer a prayer for the quick recovery of our Governor, Governor Amado T. Espino who suffered a heart attack for two hours ago and he is considered in critical condition. We are asking for your full support and prayers. We will update you of his status soon — From Espino Family.”

“It’s not true,” wrote Provincial Information Officer Orpheus Velasco in a text message to The PUNCH, adding that Espino had just called him to relay instructions for the week.

The governor himself proved he is in good shape through an interview via phone patch on radio with mediaman Rhee Fer Hortaleza.

Kung sino manang namumulitika diyan sa mga kalaban ko sa pulitika who played their games very dirty uulitin ko na huwag naman nilang gawin yan kasi pare-pareho naman tayong Pangasinense. They should not be cruel kasi may pamilya din sila,” Espino said.

Earlier, Velasco said that in a phone conversation with the governor Monday morning, Espino laughed at the spam text saying he is “well and moving around for various speaking engagements in the U.S.”

Espino also called Provincial Engineer Nestor Punay last Thursday after monitoring the news that Pangasinan was experiencing heavy rains spawned by Typhoon “Dindo, instructing the latter to advise the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (PDRRMC) to position all rescue equipment of the province in pre-determined locations.

Espino left for the U.S. last June 9, along with Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan, and is scheduled to be back in the Philippines today, July 1.

Velasco also relayed to The PUNCH Baraan’s a text message: “That malicious news now circulating that Gov. Espino suffered a heart attack is utterly false and smacks of premature and dirty politics. I just talked on the phone with the Governor just a few minutes ago to discuss the rest of our USA trip to touch-based with various Pangasinan associations. Sorry to disappoint those who wish otherwise, but Gov. Amado T. Espino, Jr. is in top shape.”

The official trip is in response to the invitations of several Pangasinan associations in various parts of the U.S. who have asked the governor to grace their meetings and induction programs.

Velasco said some of the invitations to the governor were made has early as three years ago.

In Espino’s absence, Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim and Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario assumed as acting governor and vice governor, respectively.

In a Sangguniang Panlalawigan session last week, Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Jr. branded the text message not only “malicious” but “satanic”.

Also hinting that dirty politics was behind the circulation of the malicious text message, Velasco said, “We condemn whoever is spreading this malicious disinformation.
