THE Bureau of Immigration is soon adopting the biometrics system to monitor the entry and exit of foreigners who come to the Philippines as tourists or residents.

“Due to the influx of tourists, it is very difficult to monitor foreign nationals who have almost the same names,” said Immigration Commissioner Ricardo David during a visit to the BI office in Dagupan.

The biometrics system will help adding distinguish fingerprints, facial features, birthdates and other identification marks.

With the system, the immigration office will also be able to track aliens to ensure that they do not violate immigration laws.

Kung tourist lang ang status, dapat hindi nagtatrabaho,” David cited.

LEARNING ENGLISH

He noted that Philippine schools offering English subjects remain a top attraction for foreigners.

Bukod sa magaling ang mga Filipino sa English, mura pa ang tuition (fees) dito,” he said.

Koreans and Chinese are among the top nationals who come to the Philippines to learn the English language.

But the biggest number of visitors are Filipino -Americans who are tagged.

David said the BI, together with the Departments of Tourism and Foreign Affairs, are looking into a new policy of visa-free entry for some nationalities, subject to rules and regulations. (PIA-Pangasinan/VHS)
