SP mulls extension of tax condonation period
LINGAYEN–The Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) is set to extend up to December 31 this year the condonation period during which real property taxpayers can apply for relief on the payment of interests, surcharges and penalties for previous non-payment of real property dues.
An ordinance extending the condonation, proposed by Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr., seeks to extend the validity of an ordinance passed by the SP last year that set the condonation up to June 30 this year.
Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, chair of the SP, and all the other members of the provincial board have expressed support to the proposal.
Bince said the extension is necessary because the feedback he received from treasurers and assessors in 47 towns and cities of Pangasinan is that only a few late and defaulting real property taxpayers have so far taken advantage of the condonation.
Bince also clarified that the condonation only covers the interests, surcharges and penalties and not the basic tax of the real property tax.
Bince deduced that many taxpayers could not take advantage of the condonation because of the projected expenses for the new school year.
The ordinance was passed to provide tax relief to real property owners affected by the new tax rate approved last year, which increased fees and protested by landowners.
Bince urged all taxpayers to take advantage of the condonation once approved.
