So far so good for K to 12
LINGAYEN—Two weeks into the new school year, schools superintendents in Pangasinan have reported to the Sangguniang Panlalawigan that the implementation of the new K to 12 program in their respective areas is “so far well and good”.
Dr. Aurora Domingo, schools division superintendent of Pangasinan 1, said her division has been preparing for the new nationwide basic education program since last year and this has enabled them to effect a smooth transition.
Domingo said while there were problems encountered in some schools during the opening of the new school year last June 4, these were not related to the K to 12.
On the other hand, Dr. Maria Cecilia Fernandez, city schools superintendent of Urdaneta, quoting Secretary Armin Luistro on the K to 12 implementation, said “problems are many but these are not insurmountable”.
“I am not saying that K to 12 is the answer to all (our problems) but this beautiful program would be part of the answer to our (educational) problems,” Fernandez said.
Dr. Viraluz Raguindin, schools division superintendent of Pangasinan 2, said while there were initial objections to the K to 12 from the parents, teachers have convinced them to embrace the program by “thinking of the country in the future and see where the Philippines is leading to in its education compared to its neighboring countries”.
Activities are ongoing to bridge the gap for grades 11 to 12 in the next four years, Raguindin added.
Dr. Oscar Tadeo, officer-in-charge city schools division superintendent of Alaminos, said his division “had a good start and all problems were addressed”.
Dr. Rowena Banzon, city schools division superintendent of San Carlos, said with K to 12, the quality of education is improved by decongesting subjects to enable students to absorb and learn more.
To further encourage support to the K to 12, Banzon said the message being imparted is “Ang graduate ng K to 12 ay handa sa trabaho, handa sa kolehiyo, handa sa mundo”.
The schools officials were invited by the provincial board by Fourth District Board Member Jeremy Agerico Rosario to apprise them if there is any truth to reports that “the Philippines is not yet ready for K to 12”. —Eva Visperas
