Rep. Arenas pledges initial 3 classrooms
BAYAMBANG–Third District Rep. Rachel Arenas vowed to work for the immediate construction of a three-room school building at the Bayambang Central School (BSC) to ease the plight of pupils after 12 classrooms were razed last week.
Arenas visited BCS a day after the blaze that gutted the main building of the school at dawn Wednesday after she was called by officials of the Department of Education (DepEd) to see for herself what needed to be done immediately.
Arenas noted that the totally burned Gabaldon Building, which is a century old, has a sentimental value to a lot of people of the town, especially the elderly who went to school there.
Fire Officer 2 Jose Beltran, fire marshal of Bayambang, in a talk with the congresswoman, denied that his unit suffered lapses that that caused the complete destruction of the building.
Beltran explained that the fire spread quickly and the entire building was already ablaze by the time they responded.
The fast spread of the fire as noted by Beltran gave rise to speculations of arson but Arenas appealed to the teachers and parents to await the result of the investigation before jumping to conclusions.
Arenas also pledged to make a strong representation with Education Secretary Armin Luistro to expedite the construction of new classrooms for the benefit of the more than 540 students who have been displaced by the incident.
Meanwhile, BCS principal Danilo Lopez said several concerned citizens of Bayambang had pledged to donate chairs, tables and other school facilities to replace those that were lost in the fire.
