Julaton wants to stage her world fight in Pangasinan
LINGAYEN–Fil-Am female boxing sensation Anna “The Hurricane” Julaton, a native of Pozorrubio town, has indicated her desire to engage a still unidentified opponent in a title fight before boxing fans in her native province.
The 31-year old Julaton, now living in Daly City, California, visited Pangasinan last year during which she met with Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr.
Orpheus Velasco, provincial information officer, said that Julaton told the governor then that she wants to stage a bout in Pangasinan.
“Anna was impressed by the sports facilities in our province that she was convinced that the province is capable of hosting a world women boxing championship fight,” Velasco said.
Julaton again conveyed her desire to bring her fight to Pangasinan, according to Velasco, through an e-mail sent by her promoter, Angelo Reyes, when the province was in the thick of preparation for the Palarong Pambansa which was hosted by Pangasinan last May.
Another e-mail was sent to Velasco by Reyes on Wednesday reiterating his previous message asking the Pangasinan provincial government to host Julaton’s next fight.
“I think Julaton is serious,” Velasco said, adding that he will convey Reyes’ latest e-mail to Espino as soon as he comes back on July 1 from a three-week trip to the United States.
Espino, who has been promoting sports development in the province, is expected to welcome and approve the proposal.
Espino is also a known lover of boxing, himself having been a boxer when he was still a cadet of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA).
Staging a world women boxing championship fight in Pangasinan will also serve well in promoting the province in the national and international scenes as an important center of sports in the country as well as a tourist destination, said Velasco.
Should the plan push through, options as venue include the Pangasinan Training and Development Center, the Sison Auditorium, the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center or the beach front in Lingayen, said Velasco.
