DOLE holds Independence Day Jobs Fair
MORE than 7,000 job openings were offered during the Independence Day Jobs Fair organized by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on June 12 at the Nepo Mall as part of the nationwide Kalayaan Jobs Fair project.
DOLE Regional Director Grace Ursua said about 3,000 of the job vacancies were from business process outsourcing firms such as call centers and a beverage company that will soon open a plant in Sta. Barbara.
Employment for overseas work in Singapore, Jordan, Brunei, Saudi Arabia and Qatar, were also available.
Christopher Harencio, an Electrical Engineering graduate who applied as a welder in Qatar, said, “Five years din ako sa Taiwan dati at mas gusto ko sa abroad magtrabaho because I want to see greener pastures. Mas marami kasi talagang opportunities dun (abroad) compared dito”, he said.
DOLE Spokesperson Nicon F. Fameronag said the annual event aims to promote “freedom from poverty.
“Ang layunin talaga namin rito ay para mapadali ang paghahanap ng trabaho ng ating mga kababayan,” Fameronag added.
Ursua noted that in previous fairs about 10-15 percent of applicants were hired on the spot while the rest were hired within 30 days.
“A Jobs Fair is one of DOLE’s strategies to facilitate the employment of jobseekers and help address the country’s unemployment problems,” said Labor Officer Emmanuel Hagad of DOLE Central Pangasinan during the opening of the event.
The management of host Nepo Mall took pride in holding the activity saying employment prompts economic activities.
“We are happy to help you in your job search and matching process… when money changes hand, the economy moves,” said Junior Mall Manager Walurich Dacanay.
A one- stop- shop was also set up during the fair to access services of National Statistics Office, Social Security System, Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, PhilHeath and the Professional Regulations Commission. (Raqueza S. Lalangan with report from PIA-Pangasinan / VHS)
