DepEd blocks BSL’s P40 M lying-in clinic

THE central office of the Department of Education (DepEd) has refused to yield to the city government’s plan to transfer the Juan P. Guadiz Elementary School in Dagupan to give way to the planned 24-bed lying-in clinic of Mayor Benjamin Lim.

Dr. William Macob, education program supervisor of DepEd in Dagupan, said Education Secretary Armin Luistro has not given the go signal for the proposal despite several efforts to secure it made by the administration of Lim.

Speaking during the KBP Forum on Thursday, Macob said the Juan P. Guadiz school has remained intact and will continue to accommodate its students when classes open on Monday, June 4.

Macob confirmed that city officials already had several meetings with DepEd officials on the proposal but the DepEd has refused to budge to allow the closure and transfer of the school for the P43 million-clinic.

Macob said the DepEd maintains it would be difficult to relocate some 2,000 students of the school that also houses the district office of the City Schools Division.

The mayor broached plans to relocate the pupils to the City Engineer’s Office (CEO), which, in turn will be transferred to another site.

The CEO remains at its present location but the Waste Management Division has moved out to Bonuan Binloc.

In the event that the DepEd finally gives its permission for the relocation of the school, it cannot be possibly implemented this school year 2012-2013.

“At this stage, it is too late for this school year, that is why Juan P. Guadiz Elementary School remains open for this school year,” said Macob.

Any relocation, he said, will have to go through many processes, including a study and evaluation to be made by the DepEd regional office to ensure that the new school site is according to requirements.
