Dengue cases up 10%, Lingayen has highest
LINGAYEN—Dengue cases in Pangasinan have increased by 10 per cent at 547 suspected cases from January to end-May this year compared to 494 in the same period last year.
One related death was reported this year, lower than the two last year.
This capital town recorded the highest number of cases at 45, followed by San Carlos with 37, Mangaldan (33), Sta. Barbara (32), Bayambang (24), and Binmaley (22).
While those infected had a wide age range from one to 83 years, the most commonly affected were aged 10-14 years at 128 cases.
Majority of the cases were males, representing 308 cases or 56 per cent.
Dr. Anna Ma. Teresa de Guzman of the Provincial Health Office, however, said the increase should be no cause for alarm.
But 2nd District Board Member Von Mark Mendoza expressed concern during the regular session of the provincial board Monday that the Lingayen has the highest number of dengue cases so far this year.
“I want to be assured that all schools would be ready and schoolchildren would not be affected,” Mendoza said.
He added that dengue must not be taken lightly and called on the board members to invite schools superintendents in their next session to provide updates on what are being done to address the dengue threat as well as other concerns for the June 4 school opening.—Eva Visperas
