Dagupan strengthens disaster management system
SEVERAL activities were held in Dagupan this week to enhance the disaster management system and capabilities, especially in schools.
Mayor Benjamin S. Lim led on Friday the ceremonial posting of evacuation maps at the Dagupan City National High School and West Central Elementary School, where an earthquake drill was also conducted.
Information Officer Ana Louise Velasco said the city will distribute 1,445 evacuation plans to all the public elementary and high schools in the city and the campaign will later be expanded to private schools.
Lim said the activities, which also included a rescue training, constitute the first phase of the city’s disaster management plan.
Twenty-nine pre-screened members from the disaster response team and various volunteer groups participated in the Collapsed Structure Search and Rescue training with the Makati City Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) from June 11-14.
The participants were taught techniques on searching, stabilizing and extricating victims trapped in ruins using the safest procedures.
The 29 will serve to augment the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) in its operations during calamities.
Further plans, according to Lim, include more drills and training, procurement of equipment, identification of vulnerable communities, and identification and development of evacuation areas.
The coastal city of Dagupan city lies in the Pacific Rim of Fire, where earthquakes and volcanic eruptions frequently occur. (with reports from PIA-Pangasinan-ARF, CIO)
