Anti-drug abuse council reorganized
WITH an ill-repute as an illegal drug trading center in Pangasinan, the Dagupan City government has recently reorganized its anti-drug abuse council with Mayor Benjamin Lim now sitting as chairman.
The reorganization was in response to the recent memorandum circular issued by Interior and Local Government Secretary Jesse M. Robredo calling for a strengthening of the government’s effort against illegal drugs.
Lim designated the chief of police as vice chairman while the members are the city schools division superintendent, the city prosecutor, city social welfare and development officer, city health officer, city information officer, and representatives from non-government organizations and the religious sector.
“Reports of existence of several drug laboratories and the increasing use of illegal drugs have significantly contributed to the rise in criminality, which necessitates a more aggressive and unified stance against illegal drugs to help ensure community peace and harmony,” Robredo said.
Lim has earlier initiated talks with village officials of the Muslim community in barangay Bonuan Binloc where illegal drugs trade is allgedly rampant.
Trading, however, has remained unabated even after the series of dialogue held. (with report from CIO)
