POST-PALARONG PAMBANSA

LINGAYEN—The 2012 Palarong Pambansa concludes today at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) here bearing the promise of President Benigno Aquino III during the opening ceremony last Monday that the Philippines Sports Map is in place until 2016 with focus on athlete training.

The Sports Map, prepared by the Philippines Sports Commission, has a Focused Sports Policy that lends priority to sports where Filipinos can excel such as boxing, swimming, athletics, wushu, bowling, weightlifting and billiards, and have more chances of winning.

The President said the government has initially allocated P200 million, comprising 33 percent of the country’s sports development fund, for honing athletes in these sports with the ultimate goal of bringing home Olympic gold medals.

Aquino also pointed out that he launched the Batang Pinoy national sports competition to help develop local athletes in their quest for medals in international competitions.

In line with this, the Philippine National Games is also being revived to serve as national tryouts for potential athletes from the grassroots.

The try-outs will start in Dumaguete City soon, he said,

P-Noy also said his administration is giving attention to persons with disabilities (PWDs) as well as inmates in various jails and prisons nationwide.

For this, the government has set aside P5 million for sports development among PWDs and inmates.

Meanwhile, P-Noy lauded the 6-decade old Palarong Pambansa where many of the country’s sports legends participated, including Lydia de Vega and Elma Muros in athletics, Danny Ildefonso and Marlou Aquino in basketball, and Susan Papa and Eric Buhain in swimming.

He called on the young participating athletes to pursue their sporting goals.

Ituloy lang ang sikap, disiplina at sakripisyo at tiyak sa mas malaking entablado kayo pararangalan,” he said.

Those who welcomed the President at the Palarong Pambansa included Gov. Amado T. Espino Jr., Education Secretary Armin Luistro, and former President Fidel Ramos under whose incumbency the first Palarong Pambansa was held in Pangasinan and the NRSCC built in 1995.

The national government through the Department of Education (Deped) allotted a P200 million fund for this year’s Palarong Pambansa. (with report from PIA-Pangasinan)
