Red Cross confers highest award to VM Belen Fernandez
THE Philippine Red Cross (PRC) Pangasinan chapter has bestowed for the first time its highest award on an individual for her “unparalled support” to the agency in various humanitarian projects.”
Dagupan Vice Mayor Belen Fernandez received the Merit Certificate from Red Cross during the organization’s recent celebration of its 65th anniversary.
Florame Magalong, PRC Pangasinan provincial administrator, said Fernandez is worthy of the highest honor “for being a significant, unique individual whose support to Red Cross activities in Pangasinan is unparalleled”.
Magalong said Fernandez, in her personal capacity together with her family, and their company the CSI group, donated P350,000 for the PRC Blood Center and contributed to the school-based hand washing program by providing bars of soap for distribution at the height of the AH1N1 scare.
Fernandez, who heads of the CSI group of companies, also allows free use of the company’s malls for various blood-letting activities as well as helps in medical missions of the PRC.
She added that Fernandez has publicly supported PRC’s campaign for more blood-letting activities by conducting blood letting during her birthday, the latest of which was on May 8, participated in by about 200 employees of her mall.
“This (award) is the first to happen in Pangasinan, ” Magalong said.
She added that even when Fernandez was still a private citizen, she had consistently supported Red Cross in its various humanitarian activities.
Valenzuela City Mayor Sherwin Gatchalian, PRC member of the Board of Governor, handed the award to Fernandez.—Eva Visperas
