DepEd, PSC vows support to Pangasinan Sports Academy
LINGAYEN—The provincial government’s planned establishment of a Pangasinan Sports Academy (PSA) has received promised support from the Department of Education (DepEd) and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC).
Governor Amado T. Espino Jr. said Education Secretary Armin Luistro pledged the DepEd’s support for Pangasinan being one of the provinces where a sports academy will be established, when it integrates sports development into the senior high school curriculum.
The provincial government listed the PSA as part of its sports development program when it presented its bid to DepEd for the hosting of the 2012 Palarong Pambansa, which was successfully held last week.
In a press conference here last week, Luistro said DepEd will consider provinces that already have the capacity to start the sports academy given its existing sports facilities.
Luistro indicated that Pangasinan is one of these provinces as evidenced by its ability to host the Palaro, a national competition participated in by primary and secondary level students from around the country.
The Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC) built for the Palarong Pambansa in 1995 was rehabilitated and improved for this year’s hosting of the games.
HOME FOR ATHLETES
The refurbished NSRCC, said Espino, include quarters that can be used as living quarters for athletes to be trained under the proposed PSA.
While the sports academy component of the senior high school is not yet in place, the governor called on DepEd to lend to Pangasinan its coaches and trainers every summer or even just on weekends to train local athletes on some focused sports.
Espino said the long-term objective is to eventually make the PSA the training venue for athletes from Regions 1, 2, 3 and the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR).
One requirement, however, is to require athletes of the Region 1 Athletic Association to enroll in any college and university in Pangasinan in order to qualify to join the PSA.
