Dagupeño makes waves in martial arts in US

A FOURTEEN-year old boy from Dagupan, now living in Midland, Texas, is making waves in the United States in the field of martial arts.

Ferdinand Nico Real, the only son of two children of Engr. Ferdinand and Dulce Real, has so far bagged first places 36 times; second place, seven times; third place, four times; and was already awarded the state of Texas champion jackets three times in several martial arts competitions.

A Grade 9 student at Lee Freshmen High School, the young boy’s latest victory was in the Texas Cottonbelt Nationals held May 5 in Dallas, Texas where he was adjudged first place in kata and sparring in the greenbelt category.

A Kajukenbo trainee in Matthews Arts in Midland, Texas since April 2010, Nico was also AOK Texas State Champion in 2011 both in Sparring and  Kata divisions under the intermediate category.

He was recently featured in the USA sports magazine the Taekwondo Times in January 2012 where he was recognized as the only young non-blackbelter included in kickpicks corner.

Before moving to the US, Nico studied at Ednas School where he was an honor student.
