SANTIAGO B. Villafania, one of the first recipients of the province’s Asna Award for the Arts and Culture (literature), launched his new collection of poems in the book Pinabli and Other Poems last Saturday at the Solidaridad Bookshop in Padre Faura, Manila.

The book, published by C & E Publishing for De La Salle University, consists of more than 200 anlongs (poetry in Pangasinan) that mostly speak of love, with selected translations in Filipino, English and Spanish.

The book launch was organized by the Philippine Center of PEN International, of which Villafania is a board member.

In the book’s introduction, Dr. Florangel Rosario Braid writes that Villafania’s rise as the most outstanding Pangasinan poet today is phenomenal and his writings demonstrate a more than usual keen sense of observation about the human nature and the environment around him.

Villafania is a bilingual Filipino poet who writes in English and in his native language of Pangasinan. His other works include Malagilion: Sonnets tan Villanelles (a finalist for Best Book of Poetry in the 27th National Book Awards), and Balikas na Caboloan (Voices from Caboloan, 2005) published by the National Commission for the Culture and the Arts (NCCA) under its UBOD New Authors Series.

He has been published in several countries and his writings have been translated into several languages.
