Seafood Processing Plant sets May 14 resumption
SAN FABIAN–The seafood processing plant will finally resume operations on May 14 with an importer from the United States coming to watch its resumption.
Dr. Westly Rosario, interim plant manager and chief of the National Integrated Fisheries Technology Development Center (NIFTDC), said the resumption of operation has been scheduled after the festivities for the 2012 Bangus Festival.
“It is because during the Bangus Festival, there may not be enough fish to be bought as Dagupan City needs thousands of fish to be grilled during the festival’s ‘Kalutan ed Dalan’ (Grilling in the Street) party,” he said.
In the resumption of operations, at least 20 metric tons of Dagupan bangus will be initially processed by a local company, which will potentially be passed on immediately to the US-based importer upon passing quality standards.
The plant can process up to five metric tons of fish per day.
Rosario hailed the coming of the importer saying it could be the window for processed bangus from Dagupan to break into the American market.
The processing plant already obtained Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCAP), a pharmaceutical Safety standard in the United States, thus paving the way for easier importation of processed Dagupan bangus to the U.S.
Rosario expressed hope that fish processing will continue as other exporters have already contacted their buyers from China and the Middle East.
