LINGAYEN—A proposal seeking to regulate the riding of motorcycles in tandem by commuters has been put forward at the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) in response to the rise in crimes perpetrated by men-riding-in-tandem hitmen (MRTH) that remain unabated.

Sixth District Board Member Alfonso Bince Jr., author of the ordinance, pointed out that two out of five crimes in Pangasinan are committed by MRTH.

Bince said the people of Pangasinan have been alarmed by the increase in the number of killings and robberies perpetrated by MRTH for the past several months.

“It is most imperative that robberies and other forms of street crimes perpetrated by riding in tandem or more be stopped in order for the people to stroll and live in safety,” the ordinance said.

The proposed ordinance, submitted last week for public hearings, covers the use of crash helmets and penalties for drunk driving or under the influence of prohibited drugs, among others.

Previously, motorcycle groups have opposed similar proposals citing discrimination against them.

“Give this ordinance a chance to work because it might be possible it might be the solution of the repetition of the killings in tandem,” Bince said.—Eva Visperas
