FIDE Master Pascua wins BF chess tourney

INTERNATIONAL Chess Federation (FIDE) Master Haridas Pascua ruled the Dagupan Bangus Festival-Mayor Benjamin S. Lim Cup Chess Tournament held at the University of Pangasinan-PHINMA last week.

Pascua, who hails from Mangatarem town, tallied a total of 6.5 points to win the title, ahead of top seed International Master Emmanuel Senador who also garnered the same points but had to concede to the lower place for having a lower tie-break score. Each player received P8,500 cash prize.

Pascua, the highest rated player in Pangasinan, now has four titles to his name after winning in the tournaments organized in the province since December last year.

Tied for third to fifth place, with 6 points each, were Bryan Barcelon, Zejih Angelo Merilles and Ronaldo Alvez.

Prince Mark Aquino, Leodegario Ricaña and Emmanuel Lomibao tied for sixth to eight place, with 5.5 points each.

Meanwhile, John Jasper Laxamana of Pampanga took the solo lead in the Kiddie Category (14 year old and below) by reaping 6.5 points, winning the P3,000 cash prize.

Tied for second to third place, with 6 points each, were Juan Carlos Presente and Daupan City’s Fernando Mendoza. They were followed by John Marx Anastacio, Nezie Ay Merilles and Antonio Almodal III.

Special awards went to Ernali Bayot for the top lady prize, Leodicario Ricaña the top senior player and Jimmy Austria the top local player. Each received P1,000 cash.

The tournament, sponsored by the city government, was the first tournament conducted by the newly-formed Dagupan City Chess Club (DCCC).

According to tournament director and DCCC President German C. Francisco, 190 participants joined the kiddie and the open categories, combined. (PIA/ RRF)
