Cojuangco revives nuclear plant lobby

LINGAYEN–Fifth District Rep. Kimi Cojuangco is reviving her husband’s call for the re-opening of the mothballed Bataan Nuclear Power Plant (BNPP) and the setting up of nuclear power plants in other parts of the country amid the power crisis in the Visayas and Mindanao.

Cojuangco, who replaced her husband Mark Cojuangco in the congressional seat after completing his maximum term, said the country’s leaders should revisit the nuclear power plant issue.

Speaking to newsmen during the celebration of the 432nd foundation day of Pangasinan here on April 11, Cojuangco asserted that only nuclear power plants can ensure sufficient power for the domestic and commercial demand.

After Cojuangco won in 2010, she immediately re-filed the bill previously filed by her husband seeking the revival of the mothballed BNPP.

She, however, suspended the lobby for nuclear plants last year after the tragic accident at the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plant in northern Japan following a tsunami.

But now, Cojuangco said, countries like Taiwan, China, Vietnam and South Korea are ordering the new generation type of nuclear power plants for power generation.

“I believe that if we will not join the nuclear plant age, we will never have a chance to progress and will remain a third world country,” Cojuangco said.
