“WE have never been against sex education. Like all teachings, it must be within rules.”

This was the declaration of Lingayen-Dagupan Archbishop Socrates Villegas, the chairperson of the Episcopal Commission on Catechetical and Catholic Education (ECCCE), during the launching of the series of books called “Alive to the World”.

The archbishop said it the books are intended to serve as an alternative reference for teaching human sexuality, human dignity and family life to elementary and secondary students.

“The Church is taking a pro-active stand with regard to the Reproductive Health (RH) Bill. Protest is good if you want to protect what is right and what is good but alternative is better. Here we are offering a feasible and acceptable alternative to what is being used to educate our children,” he said.

ECCCE, an arm of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) that takes care of Catholic education.

Villegas clarified that the books are not a sex education module but do contained sex education lessons aimed at educating children and teenagers “in the proper understanding of personhood, health and community life.”

The books, prepared and published by the Alliance for the Family (AFF), an international organization of educators for the promotion and protection of family life, has been used in other countries in Latin America, United States and United Kingdom.

Villegas said “Alive to the World” can be used to complement other resources available for Values Education subject.
