Alaminos police belies “serial killer” rumors

ALAMINOS CITY— The peace and order situation here remains stable and generally peaceful, according to Supt. Rolie Saltat, chief of the local police here, belying what he described as “exaggerated and sensationalized” accounts of isolated cases of lawless activities in the city.

“Most of the criminals who perpetrated these crimes are now behind bars and are now facing murder charges in court,” Saltat said.

He did admit, however, that it was unusual that five separate homicide case occurred in the city from March 8 to 22.

Saltat said these “rare incidences” were blown up by pranksters who spread tales of a supposed “serial killer” triggering concern among residents.

Three of the five incidents have been solved after the police arrested the suspects and charged them in court, according to Saltat.

The police chief stressed that the crimes were not perpetrated by only one person and that their occurrence one after the other over a period of two weeks was merely coincidental.

“The prospect of solving the other two remaining cases soon is now just a matter of time since we already have the leads and identified the suspects,” he said.

Saltat explained that he did not make any public announcement on the cases earlier so as not to jeopardize police investigation and operations.

“Mayor Hernani Braganza has ordered the police to make sure that the cases to be filed in court against these criminals are airtight,” Saltat said.

LOWEST CRIME VOLUME

Saltat cited a report issued by the Police Regional Office (PRO1) indicating that Alaminos City posted the lowest Crime Volume for the first quarter of 2012 in the entire Region 1, and is not included in the Top 10 List of Crime-Prone Areas in Pangasinan.

Meanwhile, the mayor has appealed to his constituents not to panic over reports being spread by a prankster in social networking media Facebook and through text messages.
