SRPC assures water for farmlands during summer
THE San Roque Power Corporation (SRPC) has given assurance there is enough water from the San Roque Multi-purpose Project for the irrigation of farms planted with second crop rice through the summer months in the 6th, 5th, 4th and 3rd Districts of Pangasinan.
Tom Valdez, SRPC vice president for corporate social responsibility, said SRPC can still supply the requirement of farmers until they harvest their palay in June though water in the dam is now at 243 meters above sea level (MASL), five meters below the normal water level of 248 MASL.
The water is made available even as the SRPC is generating electricity for the Luzon Grid, which was 81 megawatts (MGW) daily as of Thursday, said Valdez during the KBP Forum Thursday,
SRPC has a maximum generating capacity of 411 MGWs but because the water in the dam is continuously going down in the absence of rains in the upper stream of the Agno River, it was forced to scale down its production of electricity to 81 MGWs.
Water from San Roque Dam is also being used to irrigate farms in Asingan, Urdaneta, Villasis, Manaoag, Sta. Barbara, and part of Malasiqui.
At the same time, Valdez announced the re-regulating dam of the San Roque Dam is set to be completed by July or August this year.
The project, being built by the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) will catch water from the dam which it spills downstream of the Agno River when generating electricity.
However, lateral canals going to the farms in the service areas are yet to be constructed by NIA.
When completed, the project will be able to irrigate an additional 60,000 hectares of land in eastern and central Pangasinan as well a sin northern Tarlac and Northern Nueva Ecija.
