Search on for Dagupan’s Tasty Lechon
THE first Lechon Cook- off was held at the City Plaza on Wednesday with eight entries from Dagupan vying for the Best Special Lechon, which will be promoted as another iconic product for the city.
Adjudged as the ‘litsonero’ with the best-tasting lechon recipe was independent contestant Ariel Quinto of Barangay Malued.
The litsoneros of Linda’s Ihaw-Ihaw Restaurant and Capito’s Place placed 2nd and 3rd, respectively.
The pigs used for the roasting were sourced from Barangay Mangin where the city government distributed piglets last year as part of a livelihood program involving organic breeding.
Serving as judges were London-based World Master Chef Michael Caffrey, National Meat Inspection Service (NIMS) Inspector George Bacani, FeedPro Northern Luzon Area Manager Rey Angeles, Fortune Chinese Restaurant-Dagupan Chef Kong Mei Chen and Dagupan Bangus Jaycee past president Romualdo Siapno.
The competition was a prelude to the lechon cook- off slated on April 24, during the Bangus Festival.
The competition will be open to pig roasters from all over the country.
“There are at least 38 participants who have signified interest to join,” said Councilor Brian Lim who was appointed by Mayor Benjamin Lim, to head the Bangus Festival celebration this year.
The winning recipe in the grand contest will be adapted by the city as the recipe for its lechon delicacy.
“Dagupan will be known not only for its fish sauce, bucayo and bangus, but also for its lechon,” said Mayor Lim. (with reports from PIA-Pangasinan, CIO)
