THE Pangasinan Provincial Library located in the capital town of Lingayen has began implementing the KOHA-Integrated Library System Online Public Access Catalogue to convert its library services into full automation in the coming months.

KOHA, a Maori term meaning “gift” or “donation”, is touted as the first open source integrated library system (ILS) in the world.

The KOHA, which can be accessed even without an internet connection, was developed by Katipo Communications for the Horrowhenua Library in New Zealand through funding from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

With KOHA, books will be easier to locate and research studies will be made simpler.

In a launching ceremony held March 9, Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan said the project is another milestone for the province.

“We have to embrace modern technology,” Baraan said.

Edgardo Quiros, National Library of the Philippines (NLP) Information Technology Division Chief, hailed the provincial government for “fully embracing modern technology that will serve as a pivotal bridge towards further developing and improving library services in the country”.

Quiros said as of December 2011, the Philippines has the most number of KOHA system being adopted in local libraries with Pangasinan Provincial Library as one of the leaders in terms of modernization, followed by the Cavite Library. (PIA-Pangasinan with report from PIO)
