Pangasinan holds largest pre-natal class

BUNTIS DAY CELEBRATION

LINGAYEN—The Philippine Obstetrical and Gynecological Society (POGS) Foundation Incorporated Region 1 in coordination with the city government of San Carlos hosted a pre-natal class dubbed ‘Araw ng Buntis’ on March 10 at the San Carlos City gymnasium.

Bannering the theme ‘Maabilidad na P-Nay, Malusog na Nanay’, the event, which was held simultaneously in other cities and provinces in the country, serves as the Philippines’ attempt to land in the Guinness World Records for the most number of pregnant women attending a pre-natal class.

The POGS announced a total of 576 participants in Pangasinan, which qualified for the Guinness attempt even as it bared that there is no record to break because there is still no entry for the category Largest Pre-Natal Class.

An additional 37 pregnant women attended but were not included in the count as they registered after the 10 a.m. cut-off time while some were below the three-month pregnancy requirement of the Guinness bid.

The pregnant attendees came from various municipalities in Pangasinan.

“The pre-natal classes aims to educate women on pregnancy-related issues,” said Dr. Amelia Cayabyab, city councilor of San Carlos and past president of POGS, as she noted that the municipality of Mangaldan was the venue of the event in Pangasinan last year.

Other venues in Region 1 that held the simultaneous activity were Baguio City, Mt. Province, La Union, Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur.

Cayabyab discussed the pre-natal stage in a woman’s life while Dr. Bethafe Castillo tackled proper nutrition during pregnancy and lactation.

Aside from free services on consultation, laboratory and ultrasound services, door prizes were raffled off and iron supplements, vitamins and minerals were distributed.

Vice Gov. Jose Ferdinand Calimlim called the pregnant participants “leaders of their respective households” as he compared them with Pangasinan’s legendary female warrior, Princess Urduja.

Presidential Proclamation 569 signed by former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004 set March 10 every year as ‘Araw ng mga Buntis.’ (PIO)
