Pangasinan brings mega triple treat this summer

LINGAYEN—The biggest assortment of activities will happen this summer as the provincial government offers a mega “triple treat” with the celebration of the Agew na Pangasinan, Pista’y Dayat and Palarong Pambansa in April and May.

Reflecting Pangasinan’s rich history, diverse culture and demeanor of a champion, the big tri-celebration encompasses a kaleidoscope of activities that will showcase the “best of the bests” in Pangasinan.

The tri-celebration will kick off on April 11 with Agew na Pangasinan as the opening salvo with activities from sun-up to sun-down that will highlight the 432nd founding anniversary of the province.

Provincial Administrator Rafael F. Baraan announced earlier that while the actual founding date of Pangasinan is on April 5, the celebration has been moved to April 11 since the 5th falls on a Holy Thursday, observed as a national holiday.

Baraan said that Agew na Pangasinan activities will commence with a thanksgiving mass, followed by a commemorative program and will be highlighted with a colorful float parade and street dancing simultaneous with the blessing and opening of the 5th tourism and trade expo.

In addition, Tourism Operations Division Chief Maria Luisa A. Elduayan said the main highlight of the celebration is the holding of the ASNA Awards Search for 2012 Outstanding Pangasinenses who made a mark in their respective fields, plus the conduct of the 1st Pangasinan Literary Awards for Poem, Essay, and Short Story Writing Contest.

Anchored on the theme ‘Luyag Ko, Dayew Ko,’ Elduayan said the activities were conceptualized by Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr. as a tribute to great Pangasinan men and women and for the love of local culture.

The ASNA awards will run simultaneously with a concert at the Capitol beach area.

After the founding birth anniversary of Pangasinan comes the celebration of this year’s Pista’y Dayat dubbed as the “Mother of all Festivals in Region 1”, with different events starting on April 11 to the main day on May 1.

Activities include the following: Limgas na Pangasinan Talent Competition (April27), Takayan na Dayew (April 29), Doypuay Kalangweran 2011 Youth Camp (April 29 to May 1), Beach Games and Sayawan ed Aplaya (April 30), thanksgiving Mass, Banca Parada Pakar Awards and selection and coronation of Limgas Na Pangasinan 2012 (May 1).

Prior to the main events of the sea festival, the screening of Limgas na Pangasinan candidates for eastern, western and central Pangasinan is slated on March 17, 24 and 31, respectively.

The final event of the tri-celebration is the Palarong Pambansa 2012 where Pangasinan will be hosting the country’s biggest sporting competition for the second time after 17 years from May 6 to 12.

The weeklong sports competition is expected to bring in over 10,000 student athletes plus coaches, multitude of spectators and local and international media.

Rehabilitation and construction works on the sports venues, the largest of which is the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC), and in-house training of some 800 athletes are among the preparations being undertaken by the province.

The NRSCC is being upgraded from its 10,000 bleacher capacity to 15,000 to accommodate the multitude of expected crowd and spectators. (PIO/Ruby R.Bernardo)
