Bayambang celebrates ‘Malangsi Festival’
BAYAMBANG– Preparations are underway for this town’s ‘Malangsi Festival’ on April 8-14, to be highlighted by a street party grilling of its famous fish products including mudfish (dalag), catfish (pantat) and gurami.
‘Malangsi’ is a Pangasinan term meaning fishy smell.
Bayambang is known for its fish products sourced out from the Mangabul Lake.
The local government has prepared 500 grills for the street party dubbed ‘Kalutan tan Gayaga ed Dalan’ slated on April 13.
Chief of Police Geraldo Roxas said re-routing plans are in place as the grilling will start from Rizal street in front of the Royal Mall, which means that main road will be closed to vehicular traffic by noon time.
RUN FOR MANGABUL LAKE
Another main event of the celebration is a fun run on March 24 starting at 5 a.m.
Among the expected participants are municipal employees, policemen, barangay officials and students of Bayambang National High School and the Pangasinan State University-Bayambang campus.
A registration fee of P200 will be charged from each participant and t-shirts will be provided by the organizers.
Roxas said the proceeds of the Fun Run will go to the construction of the Mangabul Fish Sanctuary in Mangabul Lake.
The Mangabul Lake plays a big part in Pangasinan’s history, particularly in the indigenous language.
Anthropologist and UP professor Jerome Bailen, a Pangasinense, proposed to conduct diggings around Mangabul Lake to find archaeological evidence to prove that Pangasinan already existed even before the Spanish period, but unfortunately was not able to get funding.
Bayambang is one of Pangasinan’s biggest municipalities with 77 barangays and a population of 117,536 covering 16,000 hectares in land area. (PIA-Pangasinan/ Venus Sarmiento)
