70 sacks of red tide-infected shellfish seized
THE Dagupan City Agriculture Office (CAO) and River and Coastal Protection Management Office (RCPMO) seized 70 sacks of shellfish suspected to be contaminated with the red-tide toxin over a three-day period, from March 18-20.
The CAO and RCPMO monitoring team nabbed initially nine sacks of oysters and 17 sacks of mussels from Armando Yaranon, 40, and Ian Libuet, both from La Union, while preparing to transport at the Pantal-Tambac area Sunday night.
The team again seized 28 sacks of oysters and 14 sacks of mussels with an estimated market value of P34, 000 from Christopher Balagot, also from La Union, at the Magsaysay Fish Port.
The shellfish dealers failed to present their auxiliary invoice, the clearance required by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resource (BFAR) ensuring that their commodities did not come from Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning (PSP)-positive areas.
Shellfish Bulletin No.6 released on February 29 by BFAR contains a red tide toxin infection alert on bivalves emanating from the municipalities of Bolinao and Anda.
The team has endorsed the case of Yaranon and Libuet to the Dagupan City Police for possible violation of City Ordinance No. 1768 of the Executive Order No. 71. (CIO)
