IT WILL be a “Green Palaro” for the 2012 Palarong Pambansa sports competition as the provincial government aims to make the event as environment-friendly as possible.

Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Calimlim, speaking during the KBP Forum last week, announced that the existing ordinance in Lingayen, the main venue of the games, banning the use of styrofoam, plastic and other disposable materials will be strictly enforced.

This means, Calimlim said, that the participants, including the athletes and other delegates, will be asked to bring re-usable plates and utensils to avoid the use of disposable non-biodegradable materials.

Cleanliness and sanitation will be enforced at the game site, the capitol grounds, the beach and all around Lingayen and those caught violating the ordinance will be fined accordingly.

Calimlim stressed that the observance of cleanliness should be part of an athlete’s discipline.

P25M BUDGET

Meanwhile, the Sangguniang Panlalawigan (SP) has approved an initial P25 million supplemental budget as part of the province’s counterpart fund to the Palarong Pambansa.

The money will be used in completing some of the facilities needed for the event.

The Department of Education is allocating P136 million for the repair of some of the existing facilities, including the billeting areas for athletes in Lingayen, Dagupan, San Carlos City, Binmaley and Bugallon.

Calimlim said the grandstand, the contact sports arena and the indoor gym of the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center are now being completed using the initial fund allocated by the SP.

Other funds are being eyed to ensure the completion of the other needed facilities.
