THE Pangasinan Merchant Marine Academy (PAMMA) Sea Lions proved their championship caliber once again by outlasting AIE-College Golden Eagles in double extra periods of Game 2, 103-98, in their best-of-three championship duel in the Inter-Collegiate Invitational Basketball Championship of the 3rd Jimmy Fernandez Cup held last Wednesday.

The Sea Lions, champion of the 1st Cup of this tournament, thwarted the Golden Eagles earlier in the week in Game 1, 93-89, and went into the second game armed with the psychological advantage to wrap up the series.

They will represent their school and Region I in the Men’s National Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Championship scheduled March 28-April 1 in Naga City.

The Golden Eagles did come out fighting but a free-throw miss by one of its players changed the course of the battle which was deadlocked at 82 at the end of the regulation period.

AIE-C’s woes were compounded when its ace shooter Jeffrey Yanes fouled out with still 36 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter.

In the battle for third place, last year’s champion University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP) Patriots edged University of Luzon (UL) Golden Tigers, 89-85.

Meanwhile, Yanes was adjudged Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament and named in the Mythical Five together with Nestor Poserio, PAMMA, also voted as the Finals MVP; Mark Viernes, AIE-C; Joseph Angeles, PAMMA; and, Mark Joel Siador, UEP.

Voted Most Improved Player, Most Defensive Player, and Most Sportsmanlike Player were Dennis Travis, PAMMA; Joseph Angeles, PAMMA; and Mohammad Domingo, University of Luzon, respectively.—Philamer C. Celi
