Lim vows less flooding in city

MAYOR Benjamin Lim, in a meeting with barangay chairmen on January 31, vowed to address the incessant flooding in Dagupan with the improvement of the city’s drainage system.

“We will continue the drainage construction that has started in Tapuac all the way to Lucao,” Lim said.

“We cannot control the flooding caused by the San Roque Dam’s massive release of water during typhoons, but with just intermittent rains hitting Dagupan, we must not be flooded,” he added.

The mayor announced that public works funds from the national government given to barangays will be allotted for the construction of drainage systems, starting from the rivers where the water emanates, connecting all waterways so that flood waters can flow freely.

He said dredging will also resume this year, commencing with the Inarangan Lake in Malued, that would hold the flood waters in the barangay and nearby areas, including the rivers of Lomboy and Pantal.

Aside from the borrowed dredging machines that are now ready to be used again, he said the city will buy its own back hoe to speed up the work.

Lim said he has requested the Department of Public Works and Highways to cover costs of two dredging machines for use in the Pantal River.

The sedimentary soil and debris dug out from the riverbed will be given free to residents of the barangay for their use to elevate their areas.

At the same time, Lim said his administration is working on the relocation of residents along the riverbanks.

A hundred of houses, he said, will soon be ready for turn over to settlers.

Lim also promised give the city an economic boost with the reopening of the Bangus Processing Plant, the entry of an SM mall and the proposed annexation of the municipality of San Fabian to the city. (CIO)
