Cancer center being planned at R1MC
SETTING up a special division for cancer patients at the Region 1 Medical Center (R1MC) is in the drawing board.
Dr. Roland Joseph Mejia, R1MC chief, said the project proposal is now being finalized.
The cancer unit, to be called President Corazon Aquino Cancer Center, has also been conveyed to Secretary Manuel Roxas of the Department of Transportation and Communications (DOTC), who recently extended a P4 million financial assistance for medical services to the hospital’s indigent patients.
Alaminos City Mayor Hernani Braganza, standing as Roxas’ emissary, said the secretary chose R1MC for its good reputation.
Mejia, for his part, said the assistance will go a long way in helping patients not just from Pangasinan but other parts of Region 1 as well as the Cordillera Autonomous Region.
“Walang pinipili, walang kulay itong tulong na ito. Yan ang mahalagang mensahe,” Braganza said in a press briefing Tuesday.
Braganza and Mejia led the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement that outlines the utilization of the funds.
The fund will cover hospital payments, medicines, and laboratory examinations, among others, for poor patients.
The R1MC has over the last couple of years undergone renovations and expansion. Through the Health Facility Enhancement Program (HFEP) of the DOH, the hospital is expanding into a 1,000-bed capacity with surgical, medical, OB-Gyne and other specialized areas.– PIA-Pangasinan /V. Sarmiento
