ALAMINOS CITY–An aggressive tax collection campaign launched by the city government paid off with the increase in collection of business, real property taxes and other fees and charges by six percent as of January this year.

Records show the city government here registered a total collection of P25,371,953.83 from various taxes, almost 6 percent higher than the same period last year.

A report submitted by the City Treasurer’s Office to Mayor Hernani Braganza states that as of January 31, the total business tax collected by the city reached P 9,923,396.86 or 10 percent higher than last year’s.

On the other hand, real property taxes were registered at P10, 882, 311.50, which is three percent higher than last year’s collection.

The city’s collections of fees, charges and other taxes totaled P4, 566,245.47, a four percent increase.

City Treasurer Shirley Dela Cruz said the collection in January is a good indication that the city government will meet, if not exceed, its revenue targets this year, thus the city will have enough funds to carry out its programs and projects targeted for the year.

De la Cruz noted that the collection went up despite the fact that the city government did not impose new taxes or any tax hike for more than seven years.

She said that per directive of the mayor, “we just stepped up our tax collection campaign.”

To increase tax collection, Braganza created Task Force Collection Teams in a bid to hasten the collection of taxes in the city’s 39 barangays and the central business district by bringing the government closer to the community.

Five teams were formed to remind the taxpayers to settle their obligations, serve notices of delinquencies, and encourage taxpayers to avail of discounts and incentives.

In the whole of 2011, the city’s total collections for general fund amounted to P349, 466, 546.76 with the bulk coming from business tax and real property tax.
