Airport now in “clearing phase”

CONSTRUCTION of the planned airport in Alaminos City, which has encountered delays for various reasons, is now in the “clearing phase”, according to Mayor Hernani Braganza.

Braganza reiterated that the airport will benefit not just Alaminos, home of the Hundred Islands National Park which is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Pangasinan, but the entire province.

Speaking in a press conference last week, Braganza stressed that the project is intended for a province-wide economic development and should not be tainted with politics.

“We are the only province in the entire region that does not have an airport and a seaport,” Braganza said, noting that Pangasinan is the biggest province in Region 1 in terms of land area and population.

The airport project was announced by then President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in her 2007 State of the Nation Address and the groundbreaking ceremony was held in March 2010.

The capital town of Lingayen and Sta. Barbara also proposed to host an airport.

President Benigno Aquino III has included the airport, which is a national project under the Department of Transportation and Communication (DOTC), in his administration’s priority development program.
