UEP beats PAMMA; AIE-C blasts PIMSAT
3rd JIMMY FERNANDEZ CUP
DEFENDING champion University of Eastern Pangasinan (UEP) Patriots warded off a rally of the PAMMA Sea Lions in the early minutes of the last quarter to win, 91-86, in the elimination round of the Inter-Collegiate Invitational Basketball Championship of the 3rd Jimmy Fernandez Cup last Friday at the DWAD Gym in Dagupan City.
Mark Joel Siador of the Binalonan-based Patriots sizzled with a personal best of 21 points and got much-needed help from teammates Dionisio Cuaresma III and Mark Anthony Decano, with the trio producing a total of 52 points.
In the first game of the twin-header offering, AIE-College Golden Eagles thwarted winless PIMSAT Colleges Dragons, 101-92, to remain on top of the tournament with a 2-0 win-loss card.
Following this fifth consecutive loss, the Dragons are languishing at the cellar with a 0-5 record.
The other team standings are: AIE-C, 2-0; UEP, 3-1; UL, 2-2; PAMMA, 1-1; and PUNP Cruisers, 1-1.
Meanwhile, the Lyceum Northwestern University Dukes are still weighing their options whether to join the league or just quit.
The champion in this tournament, which started in December, will represent Region 1 in the National Men’s Collegiate Athletic Association Basketball Championship slated in Naga City on March 28 to April 1. —Philamer Celi
