Sual international port construction underway

CONSTRUCTION of the Sual International Shipping Port is now in full swing.

The first phase, which will be able to accommodate small ships, including barges and LCTs (Landing Craft Tanks), is targetted for completion by the end of the year

Philippine Ports Authority (PPA) Region 1 Director Silverio Mangaoang said the first of the three- phase project is already 32 percent done as of last week.

The various phases of the port operations are set for completion in two to three years.

The first phase is financed from an initial P90 million allocated by PPA.

Mangaoang said construction is now going smoothly after the acquisition of a needed right-of-way from a private landowner.

The first phase consists of a rock causeway and a wharf that extends from 200 to 270 meters.

ECONOMIC BOOST

The international port is envisioned to boost the province’s economy by serving as an exit point for export products, including minerals, and an entry point for imports such as fertilizers, which would then become cheaper for Pangasinan farmers.

Mangaoang said a company is already planning to export magnetized sand mined from different parts of the province through the port.

He added that the PPA intends to reclaim around five hectares of land.

Governor Amado Espino Jr. has also initiated the construction of a complementary economic zone near the international port for foreign manufacturers.

An eco-tourism zone is also being developed by the provincial government on the south- eastern side of the Lingayen Gulf.

Under the agreement signed in 2010, PPA and the provincial government will each allocate P200 million while Sual will provide P100 million.
