‘Plastic-for-Rice’ project resumes Jan. 28
THE novel environmental program “Plastic Mo, Bigas Ko, Palit Tayo” in Dagupan started late last year, will resume on January 28 at the Don Leon Maramba Elementary School in Sitio Longos, Barangay Bonuan Gueset.
It is the same venue where the project was launched, during which one truckload of plastic products from the residents was collected in exchange for the same volume in kilos of rice.
Councilor Jeslito Seen, the project’s proponent, explained that the plastic products collected are those not bought by junkshops and often end up disposed of, carelessly and improperly, mostly clogging drainage canals.
Seen pointed out that the flooding in some parts of Dagupan is often blamed to clogged drainage canals.
The program is a joint project of the Pandaragupan sa Kaunlaran, Department of Education, Parent-Teacher Association of Don Leon Maramba Elementary School and the Bonuan Boquig Barangay Council with Seen providing the rice supply for the exchange.
To further support the program, Seen earlier tapped technical experts of a shop manufacturing novelty items from old newspapers and plastic to conduct a seminar and demonstration to Dagupan housewives so they can learn how to recycle waste into trinkets and other items that can be sold in shopping malls.
The plastic products collected under the program are sold to a shop in Manila that will convert these into plastic chairs and tables for use of different schools in Dagupan.
