LINGAYEN—A 44-year old overseas civil engineer who came home to welcome the New Year with his family drowned at the Lingayen beach in the morning of January 8 during a family picnic.

Edgardo Visperas, a native of Barangay Mamarlao in San Carlos City, was declared dead on arrival at the Sto. Niño Hospital in this town where he was rushed.

Visperas was with his wife, Lhai Ignacio Visperas, their four children and other relatives when the tragedy struck.

Rescuers from the provincial government’s Water Search and Rescue team stationed along the shoreline were quick to respond and managed to retrieve his unconscious body but their efforts proved futile as Visperas died on the way to the hospital.

Before coming home on December 31, Visperas told his cousin and childhood friend Eva, PUNCH’s contributing writer, that he looked forward to be home again with his family and friends after many years of absence.

His younger brother Eric narrated that on the night before the incident, the victim told him how it pained him to be away from his family but consoled himself with the thought that working overseas was a means for giving them a better future.

Visperas’ remains were brought to Pampanga but interment details have not been finalized pending the arrival of immediate family members living in the United States.
