LINGAYEN—The helping hand of the provincial government of Pangasinan was extended to as far as Northern Mindanao, donating P1 million each to the local government units of Iligan City and Cagayan de Oro City for the relief and rehabilitation of the victims of tropical storm “Sendong”.

On the instruction of Governor Amado T. Espino, Jr., the cheques were personally delivered by Executive Assistant Ramon Morden and Public Information Officer Orpheus M. Velasco last December 22 to Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Vicente Y. Emano (thru City Administrator Criscelda M. Joson) and Iligan City Mayor Lawrence Ll. Cruz.

Velasco said although Pangasinan also suffered from two strong typhoons this year, Quiel and Pedring, that put the entire province under a state of calamity, the provincial government sympathized with the plight of the two cities.

Espino and the members of the provincial board led by Vice Governor Jose Ferdinand Z. Calimlim, Jr. worked hand-in-hand for the immediate release of funds to help the victims.

Meanwhile, Iligan City MayorLawrence Cruz, in his interview over Aksyon Radyo via phone-patch, thanked the provincial government officials for its quick response to the needs of their affected constituents. He said Pangasinan was the first LGU in Luzon, outside Metro Manila, to extend financial assistance to the typhoon victims in his city.

According to Cruz, resettlement is now their biggest problem since large areas of land in Iligan City have been covered with mud. He appealed to other LGUs throughout the country to follow the gesture of Pangasinan to help them rebuild and recover from the worst disaster that ever hit northern Mindanao. (PIO/Ruby R.Bernardino)
