CALASIAO—They are round and sticky.

And that makes them perfect for the New Year’s Eve celebration.

Calasiao puto, the small white rice cakes that has made this town popular, has been selling briskly in the stalls and orders are coming in bulk.

Aida, a balikbayan, said she buys puto following the Chinese belief that eating sticky food during the New Year’s Eve celebration makes good luck ‘stick’.

Another buyer, Marilou, believes that puto should be on their table when New Year comes as it is round and round- shaped foods are believed to bring in money.

Rudy Dela Cruz, president of the Calasiao Puto Producers Association, said orders and sales for puto have increased even before Christmas.

Malakas ho ngayon lalo na nung bago mag-Pasko. Tuloy tuloy na ang production at may shifting (ng personnel) araw at gabi,” Dela Cruz said.

One stall, for example, can sell as much as 100,000 pieces a day during the holidays.

For Calasiao’s puto entrepreneurs, that is truly a good way of welcoming the New Year. (VHS, PIA-Pangasinan)
