AGAIN AFTER 16 YEARS

LINGAYEN–It’s official!

After 16 years, the province will again have the honor of hosting the Palarong Pambansa, the biggest annual sporting event in the country sponsored by the Department of Education (DepEd).

Education Secretary Armin Luistro made the announcement last week following ocular inspections conducted by DepEd officials and a bid presentation by the contending provinces and once city on November 17 in Manila.

Governor Amado Espino, Jr., assisted by Provincial Administrator Rafael Baraan, made the presentation for Pangasinan, stressing the province’s available facilities, experience in hosting other national and international events, and readiness to host the games.

Pangasinan recently hosted the 3rd National MILO Little Olympics.

Espino, whose administration aims to make Pangasinan the sports center in northern Luzon, expressed elation over the DepEd’s decision.

The other bidders during the final presentation were the province of Laguna and Marikina City. Earlier contenders Isabela, Oriental Mindoro and Albay withdrew.

Pangasinan hosted the Palarong Pambansa in 1995 during the term of President Fidel Ramos who built the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center.

At that time, Espino was the Police Provincial Director and was then appointed as Palarong Pambansa Task Force Commander.

The Palarong Pambansa features various sporting events for under-18 student athletes, the winners of which usually move on to represent the country in international games.
