LINGAYEN–The 3rd National MILO Little Olympics 2011, one of the biggest sporting events in the country, was being held for the first time in Pangasinan last November 18 -20.

The event was participated in by some 1,500 school-based athletes nationwide who competed in various sports events at the Narciso Ramos Sports and Civic Center (NRSCC).

Tess Bernardino, MILO Luzon regional coordinator, said this year’s competition highlighted sports events where Filipinos can excel in regional and global matches.

“MILO is focusing on activities in which Filipinos can excel, thus a mix of Olympic sports and several other events – athletics, badminton, chess, football, gymnastics, scrabble, sepak takraw, swimming, table tennis, taekwondo, tennis and volleyball,” Bernardino said.

“Events like these give them a different experience competing at the top level while getting a chance to meet children from different backgrounds, because we build champions not only in sports but also in the bigger arena called life,” said Nestlé Assistant Vice President and MILO Sports Executive Pat Goc-Ong.

Bernardino, meanwhile, hailed Pangasinan as a venue, citing that it is the only one in Region 1 that has complete sports facilities.

Modesto Operania, provincial sports coordinator, said the Milo-sponsored event served as a “tune-up” for the coming Palarong Pambansa 2012 that the province is bidding to host. (with report from PIO)
