Erosion eating up land along Cayanga River
DRASTIC erosion, especially when the floods come in, has been wiping out huge chunks of the western bank of the Cayanga River, threatening residents as well as the nearby Seafood Processing Plant.
A campaign has been launched in Barangay Bonuan Binloc for a petition to authorities to take immediate steps to control the erosion.
Former Kagawad Julius Alcaide said the campaign seeks to call the attention of officials at the barangay, city and national levels on the need to build a water barrier or a seawall that will save the river banks and protect Sitio Puntok in Bonuan Binloc.
The Sangguniang Panlungsod, in response, has passed a resolution asking Fourth District Rep. Gina de Venecia to allocate part of her calamity fund for the construction of the needed barrier.
Dr. Westly Rosario, chief of the National Integrated Fisheries and Technology Development Center and operations manager of the processing plant, said he had actually already proposed to the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources the construction of a seawall in the area as part of the five-year development plan for the newly-built facility.
During the last typhoons “Pedring” and “Quiel” in September-October, an estimated one-hectare of land in Sitio Puntoc was swallowed by the river, according to Alcaide.
Several families in the area have already transferred to other areas fearing that their lives are already at risk if they stayed.
