Covenant signing set to end killings in Mestizo
SAN CARLOS CITY—Mayor Julier Resuello has moved to stop the successive killings of Barangay Meztizo’s kapitans.
Resuello has called for a general assembly of the residents and officials for a peace covenant signing following the murder of four barangay chairmen.
Residents continue to live in constant fear as the next successor to the vacated post earlier declined to take on the job.
The elected barangay kapitan in the October election last year, Alberto Manzon, was stabbed to death by his barangay treasurer soon after the polls.
Manzon was succeeded by Abraham dela Cruz, the top elected councilor, who was gunned down last month.
About five years ago, Barangay Chairman Severino Tamondong was shot dead and about three years later, Chairman Carmelita Torre was also killed after being shot during a graduation ceremony in a school.
Resuello said he considers these killings “isolated”, unlike previous cases in the city that he said clearly inidcated a series of murders.
Nonetheless, he acknowledged that the situation needs to be addressed.
The incumbent chairman, Oscar Austria, is still on an ‘officer-in-charge’ capacity as he continues to be reluctant to take on the post for fear of suffering a similar fate.
But the mayor allayed Austria’s fear assuring him of his safety. as long as he performs his job well.—(Contributed by Eva Visperas)
