Controversial or not, Pangasinenses cheer Pacquiao’s win

By November 19, 2011News, Sports

AS IN previous fights of boxer-congressman Manny Pacquiao, the streets of Pangasinan were practically deserted last Sunday morning as most everyone were glued to their televisions to watch the broadcast from the US.

Spectators at the first and second floors of the CSI City Mall Atrium in Barangay Lucao, where a live broadcast was offered for free, burst into cheers upon hearing the decision after being almost eerily silent during the early rounds when Marquez appeared to have the upper hand as he landed more hits on Pacquiao.

Unlike in previous matches, there was no pre-celebratory feeling among the crowd when the last bell rang as Filipinos themselves sensed a likely defeat of their champion.

Marquez already appeared jubilant while Pacquiao retreated to his corner and kneeled in prayer.

The judges scored the bout 114-114, 116-112, 115-113 and it was the only fight, and not be any means less controversial, in the two boxers’ trilogy in which Marquez did not win in the scorecard of any of the judges, and in which Pacquiao failed to score a knockdown.

Some of the spectators did concede that the decision appeared to have been marred by politics.

Nonetheless, controversy or not, Pacquiao is arriving home to the Philippines with a definite hero’s welcome.

After all, Pacquiao still outboxed Marquez, 176 to 138, but it was apparent that Pacquiao failed to dominate his opponent.
